The Federal-Provincial Agreement

In 2021, the federal and Alberta governments signed an agreement to reduce childcare fees to an average of $10/day by 2026. This is part of the Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care system.

Where Are Fees Now?

As of 2026, parent fees at approved providers have been reduced significantly through the Alberta Affordability Grant:

• Full-time care at approved dayhomes: $326.25/month (approximately $15/day)
• Part-time care: $230/month
• Full-time care at approved centres: Varies, typically $300–$500/month

While we haven't reached $10/day yet, the reductions represent savings of 50–70% compared to pre-agreement fees.

Who Qualifies?

The Affordability Grant is universal — every family with a child in an approved program receives the reduced rate. Key points:

• No income test required
• No separate application needed
• Applied automatically by your childcare provider
• Available at both dayhomes and daycare centres

Additional Support for Lower-Income Families

The Alberta Child Care Subsidy provides further reductions for families below certain income thresholds. Combined with the Affordability Grant, some families pay $0 in parent fees.

What About Unapproved Providers?
