Preparing Your Child for Their First Day at a Dayhome

Starting at a new dayhome is a big transition — for both children and parents. Here are some practical tips to make the first days smoother for everyone.

Before the First Day

Visit Together

Schedule a short visit before the official start date. Let your child explore the space, meet the caregiver, and play with the toys. Familiarity reduces anxiety.

Talk About It

Even very young children understand more than we think. Talk positively about the dayhome: "You're going to play with friends and have so much fun!"

Practice the Routine

A few days before, start adjusting your morning routine to match the dayhome schedule. If care starts at 6:30 or 7:00 AM, start practising earlier wake-ups.

Pack Together

Let your child help pack their bag. Include a comfort item — a favourite stuffed animal or blanket can make all the difference.

The First Day

Keep Goodbyes Short

A long, drawn-out goodbye makes things harder. Give a hug, say "I'll be back after snack time" (or a similar concrete reference), and go. Trust that your child will settle quickly.

Expect Some Tears

It's completely normal for children to cry at drop-off for the first few days (or weeks). This doesn't mean they're unhappy — it means they love you and the transition is new.

Stay in Touch

A good caregiver will send you updates and photos throughout the day. Don't hesitate to ask how your child is doing — it helps everyone.

The First Week

Give it time. Most children fully adjust within 1-2 weeks. Consistency is key — try to maintain the same schedule every day.
